pop culture update

So I saw 50 First Dates yesterday. It was a nice little Drew and Sandler movie. The Wedding Singer is probably funnier, but in 50FD Adam Sandler does't do his doofus routine so much, which i think is a good thing, but others might disagree.

Bought some books the other day:
The Suicide Club by Robert Louis Stevenson
The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath
Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo

Yep, a real collection of books that'll brighten your day. When the lady at the bookstore saw that I was buying Johnny Got His Gun, she was like, "Oh my god, this book was so depressing. I wish I never read it."

I also bought In a Sunburned Country by Bill Bryson, just to keep things from getting too depressing. Also, The Suicide Club doesn't actually look like a downer. It sounds pretty cool. It also attracted me because in one of my favorite books, X20: a novel of (not) smoking, the main characters start a club jokingly called The Suicide Club.

In general, though, any club that is established around a grim and dark idea is interesting to me. For example: The Liars Club, The Lonely Hearts Club, Fight Club, etc. Unfortunately, books that have these interesting names aren't always interesting. There's this one book that I always see in the bookstore called The Broken Hearts Club, and I always pick it up, forgetting that I have looked at it numerous times and that it didn't look too interesting in the first time I picked it up (mostly because it looks like a throw-away thriller that you'd find in an airport gift store).

And since I've already talked about movies and books, I might as well write about TV.

The television shows I can't wait to watch every week (keeping in mind that the only channels we get good reception on is NBC and FOX):

The Simpsons
Obviously.

Arrested Development
Surprisingly funny, considering that it's executively produced and narrated by Ron Howard.

The O.C.
I was originally against ever watching this show, because who wants to watch another show from Fox about rich teens in California. But then everyone was talking about it and I had to watch and it turns out that it's actually pretty good.

Scrubs
I just started watching this show, but I wish I had started a long time ago, because it's extremely funny and odd and underrated.

The Apprentice
I watch this and a couple other reality shows, and I've realized that I watch them because I love to hate the stupid people that are on these shows.

Fear Factor Couples
Which ends this week. It should be noted that I hate the regular Fear Factor, but the couples edition was addictive.

Shows I would watch if I had cable:
The Office
most of Adult Swim
Queer Eye for the Straight Guy
Curb Your Enthusiasm
The Daily Show
Reno 911
other stuff I'm forgetting

Also, I'd probably watch Alias and 24 but I haven't had a TV for so long that I'd be lost trying to catch up now.

As for music, I haven't bought and new CDs lately, and I don't really listen to the radio. Right now I'm listening to a lot of My Morning Jacket, The Postal Service, and Bright Eyes.
